19 December 2019
Important notice to our parents, whānau and caregivers .
Through the Primary Teachers and Primary Collective Agreement settlement this year, eight additional Teacher Only Days were allocated in an accord between the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa (Primary Teachers’ union and PPTA Te Wehengarua (Secondary Teachers’ union). The teacher only days, both in terms of actual days and use must be set in consultation with the Board of Trustees.
The Birkdale Primary School Board of Trustees has approved 3 of those Teacher only Days for 2020. The first of those days will be taken on Thursday 9 April 2020 and the school will be closed for instruction on that day. The teachers will join other schools within our Birkdale Beachhaven schools cluster to undertake professional development ‘Integrating Te Reo Māori across the Curriculum’.
Please see below the detail regarding the additional details:
Arising from the recent employment agreement negotiations for the Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement, the Primary Principals’ Collective Agreement, the Area School Teachers’ Collective Agreement and the Area School Principals’ Collective Agreement it was agreed that any one principal or teacher is entitled to a maximum of 8 teacher only days.
These days are to provide teachers and principals with additional time to:
Refresh and deepen their knowledge and practice around the local curriculum (within the context of the removal of national standards)
Strengthen their understanding of the use of assessment tools for learning and teaching
Respond to the recommendations of the education work programme in the Curriculum, Progress and Achievement (CPA) Report
Familiarise themselves with curriculum work changes that will become available over the term of the collective agreements.
